Is masturbation sex?
The simple answer is, yes!
Sex is typically and widely defined as penetrative—exclusively (and patriarchally) penis inserted into vagina. This is an outdated and narrow definition and I encourage you to discard it.
Sex is defined by you and your lovers. Sex can be kissing; holding hands; cuddling; making out; penetration with fingers, penis, dildos; naked time; play with sex toys; skinny-dipping; sexting; phone sex; verbal play; watching porn together; foreplay; and so on, so forth, etc.
Even if you have a sexual partner in your life, masturbation is the best way to stay connected to what your body needs and wants. Sex with lovers is different than sex with yourself. Masturbation increases your ability to communicate your exact desires and needs during sexual activities with lovers.
